Environmental Noise Assessment:
Wind turbine Noise

Standards used in assessment.
ETSU R97. Noise assessment of windfarms
Environmental noise standard to be achieved for single wind turbines
Less than 35dB LA90 at the boundary of the nearest noise sensitive receiver. If this can be demonstrated a noise assessment is not normally required.
Where the initial analysis indicates that the predicted LA90 value will be greater than 35dB then it is possible that the prevailing LA90 + 5dB at windspeeds up to 12m/s may permit development. This can only be determined by measurement.
At night the threshold value is 43dB at the boundary of the nearest noise sensitive receiver.
World Health Organisation Guidelines on community noise
Internal levels required for the preservation of restful sleep
Both of the night time values should be achieved with the window of the room open
Music noise:
Music noise inside a room used for sleeping should be less than NR15. Once again it is recommended that this be achieveable with the window in the room slightly open for ventilation purposes. This can be difficult to achieve at short seperation distances.
